Sri Lanka claimed the 1996 Cricket World Cup. 1996 Cricket World Cup is also known as the Wills World Cup according to its official sponsor. ICC arranged this world cup. It was the 6th Edition of this tournament. Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka were the co-host of this world cup. Srilanka became the champion of the tournament by defeating Australia in the Final Match. The Final Match was held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. The 1996 was so dramatic. For security purpose Australia and West Indies didn’t go to Srilanka. They were concerned of the Central Bank Bombing. The Tamil Tigers were responsible for the bombing in January. But Sri Lankan govt. tried a lot to bring these two teams to their country by assuring maximum security. Moreover ICC declared that Sri Lanka is safe for playing matches. But Australian and West Indian were in the same position. They didn’t change their decision. Then ICC declared that Sri Lanka would get forfeit in both games. So Sri Lanka qualified for the quarter-finals without playing these two matches because of this decision.

12 teams were participated in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. There were two groups & each group consists of 6 teams. Three teams were participated to the world cup for the first time. And these three teams were Kenya, UAE and Netherlands. Kenya made history by defeating West Indies. UAE got a victory by defeating Netherlands. But Netherlands lost all the five matches of group rounds.
Group A: Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, India, Kenya Zimbabwe
Group B: Pakistan, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates
Sri Lanka made a nice plan in 1996 world cup. They took the advantages of fielding restrictions during the first 15 overs. Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana was the opening batsman of Sri Lanka. Almost every match these two used to score 100+ runs for Sri Lanka in first 15 overs.
Sri Lanka has changed the trend by scoring around 100 runs in 15 overs while 50 or 60 runs were considered adequate earlier. They made 117 runs against India in overs in group match.
Moreover they made 123 against Kenya and 121 against England in the quarter final match. Again in the semifinal they scored 86 runs from first 15 overs against India. Sri Lanka made a world record by scoring 398/5 from 50 overs.

Sri Lanka vs India
Sri Lanka was awarded the match due to rioting crowd against India. Batting first Sri Lanka made a challenging total. Dashing batsman Aravinda de Silva played a hurricane like innings of 66 runs from only 47 balls. Moreover, the other batsmen also contributed a lot to make this total of 251/8 from 50 overs.
In reply India failed to make a good start. They lost their wickets in a regular interval. Only the master blaster batsman Sachin Tendulkar played a dutiful innings of 65 runs from 88 balls with some delightful strokes. But the rest of the batsman failed to do anything for their team.
While the match was in 34 overs and it seemed to everybody that India is going to loss the match, the crowd started rioting. It was almost impossible to handle the crowd. So the ICC decided to make Sri Lankan winner of the match. So Sri Lanka qualified for the final of the 1996 cricket world cup. Aravinda de Silva was awarded the player of the match.
Score: Sri Lanka 251/8 (50 overs), India 120/8 (34.1 overs)
Result: Sri Lanka was awar.
Australia vs West Indies
In the second semifinal Australia and West Indies faced each other. Batting first Australia made a defending total. Australian batsman Stuart Law scored 72 runs from 105 balls. After 50 overs Australia made 207/8 from 50 overs. Curtly Ambross captured 2 wickets spending 26 runs.
In reply West Indies were going well to the target because of Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 80 runs. The match was ended in last overs. West Indies lost their all wickets at 202 within 49.3 overs. Shane Warne played a vital role to win the through his leg spin. He captured 4 wickets and awarded the player of the match.
Score: Australia: 207/8 (50 overs), West Indies 202 all out (49.3 overs)
Result: Australia won the match by 5 runs.
1996 Cricket World Cup Final
Sri Lanka vs Australia
In the final match of 1996 cricket world cup Sri Lanka won the toss and send Australia to bat first. Mark Taylor Scored 74 runs from 83 balls with 8 fours and a six. Moreover the young Ricky Ponting made 45 runs from 73 balls. He scored this runs with 2 boundaries. After 50 overs Australia made 241 runs loosing 7 wickets.
Chasing a total of 242 Sri Lanka started well. Aravinda de Silva played a fabulous innings of 107 runs from 124 balls. Sri Lanka got a comprehensive win against Australia by 7 wickets due to the century of Aravinda de Silva. Again he was awarded player of the match. Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga led the team from the front. At last he lifted the 1996 world cup trophy.
Allegations on 1996 Cricket World Cup Semifinal Match
India lost to Sri Lanka due to rioting crowed in the semifinal match. Indian batsman Vinod Kambli made an allegation that he suspected the rioting event of the crowd was fixed earlier.
He considered the match as a spot fixing match. He said that they were surprised to see that the Indian captain choose to field even after winning the toss while they all decided to bat first if India win the toss.
Ex Indian Captain Mohammad Azharuddin said that they allegations were totally rubbish because it was made by a lack characters person. Moreover, ICC President Sharad Pawar considered this allegations as irresponsible.
